Glossary: Deep / selective focus shot

A use of the camera lens and lighting that keeps both the close and distant planes being photographed in sharp focus (deep focus); a restricted depth of field that keeps only one plane in sharp focus (selective focus, also known as shallow focus).

Note: Shifting the area of sharp focus from one plane to another during a single shot, as in the above example, is known as 'pulling' or 'racking' focus.
