Planning for Class Trip to the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Friday, January 18, 2008

The Walker Art Center Website is located at http://www.walkerart.org/index.wac.  The Minneapolis Institute of Arts website is located at http://www.artsmia.org.  I encourage you to browse these sites before the class trip.  In case you want the opportunity to take a look at the museum before or after our official trip, I have included directions to both museums below.

Day of the Class Trip:

The vans will leave from Parking Lot 6 (the big lot in back of the Performing Arts Building) no later than 8:00 a.m.  Please try to be there sooner, if possible.

Walker Art Center:

If you are driving from Mankato, you should also plan on leaving town no later than 8:00 a.m.  If you drive yourself, there is a parking garage underneath the Walker.  We will meet on the first floor at the ticket counter opposite the elevators (around the corner from the gift shop) by 10:00 a.m. when we will meet our tour guides.

The tour should last about one hour.  You will then have the chance to browse the museum and/or have some lunch.  In addition to the very well-reviewed but somewhat expensive museum restaurant, there is a café and lunch room as well.  We will meet again by the elevators to the parking garage no later than noon and leave for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts:

There is a free parking ramp and lot next to the MIA/Children’s Theatre complex.  (Be careful of time limits for on-street parking.)  The entire class will congregate in the main lobby of the museum (under the blazing yellow glass “Sunburst” sculpture by Dale Chihuly) by 12:30  p.m.

We will then have a tour (in two groups) of the Africa, Americas, and Pacific galleries for about an hour.  You will then have another hour or so to view these collections more closely and/or browse other parts of the museum.  Those of us on the vans will meet again in the lobby no later than 3:00 p.m.  We should be back in Mankato (with a stop for gas) by 5:00 p.m.

NOTE: IN THE EVENT OF BAD WEATHER, I WILL SEND AN EMAIL TO YOU ALL BY 10:00 AM ANNOUNCING POSTPONEMENT OF THE TRIP.  Right now, the weather forecast does not anticipate snow, but it will be bitterly cold!

IF YOU CANNOT GO ON THE JANUARY 18 CLASS TRIP

Option 1:         You can arrange an individual trip or small group trip with others

Option 2:         You can take a “virtual tour” of the museum’s web site and other resources

I will have more details on both options on a separate handout..

Directions to the Walker Art Center from Mankato

The Walker is located at 1750 Hennepin Avenue and Vineland Place, just across the avenue from Loring Park and north of where Lyndale and Hennepin Avenues merge.  From Mankato, the easiest route is to take US 169 north to I-394/US 12.  Take i-394 east and get off at the Dunwoody Boulevard exit.  Follow Dunwoody and turn right on Lyndale Avenue.  Stay in the right lane.  The next exit on the right will be for Vineland Place and the Walker.  (See map.)

Also see http://www.artsmia.org/general-info/

The Institute is located at 2400 3rd Avenue South, on 24th Street, between Stevens Avenue and 3rd Avenue South, just across from Fair Oaks Park.  It is next to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD).  The main entrance is on 3rd Avenue (not the big staircase on 24th St.) in a common lobby shared with the Children's Theatre Company.

To get to the MIA from the Walker:

Go east on Vineland Avenue towards Lyndale/Hennepin.

Turn right at the stop light and bear left toward Lyndale Avenue.  Be careful not to get on the ramp for US I-94!

Go straight south on Lyndale to 24th Street and turn left.

Follow 24th Street east to 3rd Avenue.  The MIA faces the final block.

Turn right on 3rd Avenue and go to the parking ramp next to the Children’s Theatre/MIA building.  Parking is also available in lots across the street or on the street (but make sure you notice any time limits or other restrictions!).

When returning to Mankato, go south from the MIA on 3rd Avenue to 26th St.  Turn right.  (It’s a one-way street.)  Turn left on Stevens Avenue and continue south past Lake St.  You will see the entrance ramp ramp for I-35W south just ahead.

Follow I-35W to the exit for Cty. Highway 62 West.  Take Highway 62 to Highway 169.  Take the southbound exit and follow 169 to Mankato.
